Chapter 7
On Writing
Writing is a calling many are drawn to, but which few master. Thatâs a shame, as if there were more talented authors, it would be far easier to burn through the submissions to your new web âAgencyâ and find a bestseller. But life isnât always easy, so you have to commit to doing the hard work and finding the manuscript that best fits the description of a âWork for the ages young and old alike will love.â
The following sections are tips for authors, or authors-to-be.
I, Russell Blake, have synthesized the rules of usage and general tips for writers so you can best appreciate the road you must follow if youâre going to be successful and effective. Words are powerful tools, and every one of us has at least one story in us, so itâs important to free the muse and let that voice be heard.
My job is not just to inspire you, but to give you practical tactics and tips you can begin using to immediately improve your offerings. Friends and fans alike will notice a distinct difference. This section alone is worth a fortune, and yet you get it as an inclusion in this eBook at no additional cost, which is amazing given how much Iâve already given.
But thatâs just what Russell Blake does. He gives. Itâs the Russell Blake Way â¢.
Tip #27 â Plagiarize
You can either agonize over every sentence, spending hours finding the right effective combination of words and tone, or you can let someone else do all that grunt work and simply copy the best parts, and use them as your own, without attribution.
So which do you think is the smart way to go? What have we learned so far? Not just that you always have to pitch, but you want to work smart, not hard. The surest route to crafting brilliant, riveting work that sings and moves, is to find the work of someone else that already achieves that, and cut and paste it.
But then take it the next step. This is the Russell Blake âSecret Writerâs Sauce â¢â that will kick your work up to a whole other level. Pay attention. This is important.
After youâve cut and paste the sentence or paragraph, change just a few inconsequential words, so that a cursory Google search of the cut and paste doesnât reveal the original source document!
I know. Itâs brilliant.
Genius, really.
So letâs say youâve found a sentence you really want to use, as it has an evocative tone youâre striving to achieve, but lack the skill or time to. First, copy it. Next, paste it. Then, change a word or two.
Example: âNora felt his hot breath on her heaving shoulders as he ripped the thin silk from⦠â
Now we use Russell magic, and change or add a word or two, and make it our own:
âLora felt his steaming breath on her heaving shoulders as he ripped the gossamer silk fromâ¦â
Do you see? I not only changed the subject to match my protagonist, but I also went to the Thesaurus and found a synonym for âhotâ and swapped them.
